The British Dyslexia Association
defined dyslexia in 2003 as: A combination of abilities and difficulties which
affect the learning process in one or more of reading, spelling and writing. Accompanying
weaknesses may be identified in areas of speed of processing, short-term
memory, sequencing, auditory and/or visual perception, spoken language and
motor skills. It is particularly related to mastering and using written
language, which may include alphabetic, numeric and musical notation.
A Working Group of the International Dyslexia Association
provided in 2003 the following working definition of dyslexia: Dyslexia is a
specific learning disability that is neurobiological in origin. It is
characterized by difficulties with accurate and/or fluent word recognition and
by poor spelling. These difficulties typically result from a deficit in the
phonological component of language that is often unexpected in relation to
other cognitive abilities and the provision of effective classroom instruction.
Secondary consequences may include problems in reading, comprehension and
reduced reading experience that can impede growth of vocabulary and background
knowledge.
